Why Jean-Pierre Conte Chose an Endowment, Not a Grant, to Fund Parkinson’s Research
A standard research grant arrives with a defined end date. A project funded for three or four years reaches its conclusion whether or not the science does. Endowed professorships work differently, and it’s a distinction that matters in fields where a single discovery can take a generation to surface.
Jean-Pierre Conte gave $5 million to the University of California, San Francisco in November 2024 to establish two endowed professorships in the Department of Neurology. Both positions support Parkinson’s and neurodegenerative disease research. An endowment doesn’t expire at the end of a grant cycle. It generates continuing support for faculty research, teaching, and related academic work, year after year, for as long as the institution remains viable.
“UCSF is an incredible place – the #1 recipient of NIH funding, with some of the most highly regarded clinician-scientists working to improve treatments for Parkinson’s and other diseases,” Conte said in remarks published by the university.
The choice of UCSF reflects both the institution’s standing and the nature of the research challenge. Parkinson’s disease has no cure, and the work spans genetics, biomarkers, disease mechanisms, and potential treatments. That scope can’t be captured by any single grant cycle. Researchers need funding for individual experiments, yes, but they also need the infrastructure and long-term institutional backing to pursue questions that may take decades to answer.
Jean-Pierre Conte, managing partner of a San Francisco middle-market private equity firm and founder of the J-P Conte Family Foundation in 2017, has built his giving around that kind of sustained commitment. The Foundation supports education, medical and scientific research, and environmental conservation.
